Mamajuana has a mysterious heritage that may date back many hundreds if not thousands of years.
The ancient recipe for Mamajuana has been handed down through just a handful of families often by word and deed rather than in any tangible form (that could be liable to being ‘compromised’!)
Of the few families in the Dominican republic who still make real mamajuana – by hand gathering wild-crafted herbs, roots, barks and other strange botanical ingredients from secret places – some can trace their ancestory back to the Taino natives who peacefully inhabited the Island that has since become the home of both Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Tainos are thought to be an offshoot of Amazonian tribes people who ventured across the ocean and landed on the shores of a ‘kind of Eden’ – the land that Columbus thought the most beautiful he had ever seen (and he saw a few places!)
Naturally the Spanish ‘came in peace’ but soon set about enslaving and slaughtering the largely peaceful Taino natives! The few who stood up to the Spanish were soon made examples of and became famous Taino martyrs.
Sadly they stood little chance against the might of the conquistadores and were soon almost wiped-out. The few Tainos who managed to survive soon integrated into the the hotch-potch of slaves and settlers who became the stock of the emerging country of Santo Domingo.
Some of those survivors handed down the recipe for the acclaimed ‘cure-all’ that is known as Mamajuana. Mamajuana today has perhaps cultivated a slightly ‘risque’ reputation insofar as it is claimed to be one of the world’s most potent aphrodisiacs…Naturally no medical claims can be directly made for Mamajuana or the liquor produced from the mixture of Mamajuana plant based ingredients. But anecdotal evidence of its efficacy are legion…and as they say the ‘proof of the pudding is in the eating’…or in this case ‘the drinking’ -
